Sofia Regional Conference on the Convention on Cluster Munitions

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria.
The objective of this event is to allow for an in-depth discussion of the recently adopted Convention on Cluster Munitions, and the opportunities and challenges it presents to the region of Southeast Europe. The Convention is of particular importance for the region as parts of Southeast Europe are heavily affected by the use of cluster munitions in the recent years.
The seminar is aimed at legal experts, technical experts and diplomats dealing with the issue of cluster munitions from the countries participating in the Regional Cooperation Council.
The program of work will include three sessions:
- Session I – the Convention on Cluster Munitions as a new legal international norm – the obligations it creates and its relationship with other legal commitments countries might have;
- Session II – Humanitarian aspects – victim assistance, risk education, clearance of affected areas;
- Session III – Preventing Proliferation – stockpile destruction and management.
