In the mid- 1990s, mine action NGOs started to publish reports highlighting the need to better integrate the various aspects of mine action (survey and marking, clearance, mine risk education), as well as the importance of consulting and engaging civil society in the determination of priorities for mine action activities. In addition, the United Nations Secretary-General provided annual reports to the General Assembly on progress in mine action and the UN has since released numerous reports and documents including country assessment reports, standards for mine action activities and portfolios of mine action projects needing further assistance, Included in "Humanitarian Mine Action" are resources detailing the nature of mine action programs, the strategy, capacity and effectiveness of these programs and the framework and standards through which they are developed.
