Landmine Monitor is the research and monitoring initiative of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and the de facto monitoring regime for the Mine Ban Treaty. It monitors and reports on States Parties’ implementation of and compliance with the Mine Ban Treaty, and more generally, assesses the international community’s response to the humanitarian problem caused by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). The Landmine Monitor project represents the first time in history that NGOs have come together in a coordinated, systematic and sustained way to monitor a humanitarian law or disarmament treaty, and to regularly document progress and problems, thereby successfully putting into practice the concept of civil society-based verification.

Position Summary:

Mines Action Canada (MAC), an ICBL member organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the Landmine Monitor project.

Landmine Monitor Report 2008: Toward a Mine-Free World, an 1,100 page annual report.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a review of reports to ensure factual accuracy;
  • Help to incorporate new data into near-final, edited reports;
  • Proofread reports;
  • Provide additional editing assistance to the final editing team as required;
  • Participate in regular meetings of the final editing team.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in writing, journalism, communications or social sciences;
  • Strong (native fluency) English-language writing and editing skills;
  • Two years of proven professional research and editing experience, preferably with experience working on disarmament-related publications;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word including advanced functions (i.e. styles and footnoting), internet and email proficiency;
  • Strong inter-cultural communication skills;
  • The ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a team;
  • Functions well under pressure, can handle numerous tasks simultaneously and excellent time management skills;
  • Must be able to work sometimes long, non-traditional hours;
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail; and,
  • The ability to be creative, flexible and adaptable.
