(Friday 13 February 2004
) Standing Committee on Victim Assistance and Socio-Economic Reintegration, 10 February 2004.
Co-Chairs: Australia and Croatia
Co-Rapporteurs: Nicaragua and Norway
Key discussions:
- Presentations by 20 mine-affected States Parties
- Welcome of the 14 landmine survivor advocates from Abkhazia, Albania,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chechnya, Croatia, Georgia, Russian
Federation, and Ukraine
- Some very practical, field-based information on economic integration from
Cambodia
Highlights:
- The focus and specificity of the information given by mine-affected States
Parties
- Suggestion that the Standing Committee focus on analysis of four P’s
(problems, plans, progress and priorities) on a list of the 20 most Victim
Assistance needy States Parties
- The intervention by the survivor group was very targeted, practical, and
straight-forward.
Concerns for the ICBL:
- No immediate reaction to the posted list (see second bullet point under
“highlights” above. Makes us wonder how closely States Parties are
paying attention...
Quote of the day
From the Holy See:
“Landmine Victims are victim of a wrong approach to
security.”
