France: Cinéma Vérité 2008 supports the Convention on Cluster Munitions

During its 2nd International Rendez-Vous, held in Geneva, Paris and Abu Dhabi from 8 to 15 October, the French film festival Cinéma Vérité called on its prestigious guests to support the Convention on Cluster Munitions by signing the People’s Treaty.

Last year, Cinéma Vérité had joined with ICBL Ambassador Jody Williams and with the ICBL, Nobel Peace Prize Co-Laureates, to shed light on the crisis caused by landmines and cluster munitions. A convention to ban cluster munitions was being negotiated at that time. It has since then been adopted by 107 countries in May 2008 in Dublin.

By signing the People’s Treaty in Paris on 11 October, Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maatai, Honorary President of the 2nd International Rendez-Vous, joined H.M Queen Noor of Jordan; H.E Esther Kamatari, Princess of Burundi; Joël Soler, President of Cinema Verite; Bob Geldof; French stage director Ariane Mnouchkine; member of French Parliament Christiane Taubira; fashion designer Chantal Thomass as well as film-maker Euzhan Palcy, who directed the award-winning movies “Rue Case Nègre” and “A dry white season”. Many other citizens signed the People’s Treaty at the ICBL desk of the NGO village, inaugurated by French Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Secretary Rama Yade, H.M Queen Noor and Yamina Benguigui, Deputy Mayor of Paris and film director.

Through their signature on the People's Treaty, they joined over 100,000 citizens in 89 countries who have already signed to remind governments that the world is watching and that they must fully commit to solving the cluster bomb problem by signing the Convention on Cluster munitions in Oslo, on 3 December 2008.
