Arab Network for Research on Landmines and ERW Renews Call for Ban on Landmines and Cluster Munitions

At the opening of the Regional conference on landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), held in Damascus, Syria, on 13-15 March 2007, the Arab Network for Research on Landmines and ERW renewed its call for governments to ban anti personnel landmines and cluster munitions. It also welcomed the initiative of the Norwegian Government to start a process towards an international ban on cluster Munitions.

The fourth regional conference that was organized by the net, took place in Damascus university and was attended by more than 65 participants from the region including Yemen, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Algeria, Tunisia, Kuwait, Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon, Libya and Morocco.

Also in attendance were representatives from Handicap International, Geneva Call, MAG, Quaker, ISESCO, the Arab League as well as the Canadian embassy, and media.
The opening session was attended by representatives from the Syrian Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health and from the Governorate of Quneitra.
