Kuwait is the sixth state to join the Mine Ban Treaty in the Middle East and North Africa, the world's region with the lowest rates of adherence to the treaty. It joins Algeria, Qatar, Tunisia, Yemen and Jordan, which in November 2007 will host the 8th Meeting of States Parties to the treaty.
"Kuwait's decision is a very brave significant one, as it sends a positive signal of political will in a highly volatile and tense region," said Ayman Sorour, ICBL management committee member. "We hope that this will pave the way for more states in the Middle East, and especially in the Gulf region, to join the struggle against antipersonnel mines."
In March 2007, the ICBL conducted an advocacy mission to Kuwait and neighbouring Bahrain to encourage accession to the treaty.
