Intervention by Margaret Arach Orech
20th anniversary informal session
11th Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
30 November 2011

I am Margaret Arach Orech from Uganda.

I survived a landmine injury 13 years ago in which I lost part of my right leg.

After going through physical and psychological rehabilitation that took nearly one year, I was ready to go out and be involved in campaigning against the use of anti-personnel mines, an indiscriminate weapon that has altered the lives of many people; survivors, communities and affected states.

This I have done by raising awareness about the Mine Ban Treaty in my community, country and at many international forums.

Bringing to light the plight of survivors and how best to reintegrate them into society.

Inclusion is and still remains an integral part to the work of the MBT.

First it gives a human face to what the convention is all about – human lives at stake! Secondly, survivors are better placed to direct the course of action for any interventions regarding their own issues.
We survived, we can help others survive!
