1.) Introduction

The 6th Meeting of States Parties will be held at the Zagreb Fairground at Zagreb from 28th November – 2nd December. The meeting is a pivotal event in the life of both the Mine Ban Treaty and the civil society movement against landmines. Over 200 ICBL campaigners will participate in the meeting as observers.

2.) Registration
The ICBL registration deadline was 7 October. Registration is now closed. If you have outstanding circumstances and have not yet registered, please contact andre@icbl.org.
If you have not done so already, please provide us with your arrival and departure date, time, flight numbers and passport details. Please send immediately at rolo@icbl.org
3.) Visas
Participants are responsible for applying for all visas needed to travel to and enter Croatia. Croatian visas will be issued free of charge at Croatian missions abroad and at the airport upon arrival at Please airport, Zagreb. The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued ICBL a Croatian visa waiver letter. Transit visa fees will not be waived. All sponsored ICBL participants and non-sponsored participants coming from regions other than Europe and North America have received this waiver letter by email and fax.
All participants are encouraged to apply for the necessary visas immediately.

4.) Hotels

  • The ICBL has made block bookings at the Best Western Hotel Astoria, Palace Hotel Zagreb, Arcotel Allegra, Central Hotel, and Dubrovnik Hotel. All Hotels are located within easy walking distance of each other. Sponsored guests will be staying at the Best Western Astoria Hotel, Palace Hotel Zagreb and Arcotel. All rooms at Best Western Astoria and Central Hotel are booked and we have a few rooms left at the Arcotel Allegra and Palace Hotel Zagreb. All sponsored participants with hotel bookings have received confirm of their booking by email.
  • For sponsored guests: please keep in mind that you will be asked to share a room with another campaigner of the same gender. The ICBL will cover the cost of your room but you must pay for all extra costs including telephone calls, Internet access, mini-bar, laundry, etc.
  • For non-sponsored guests: the hotels have been notified that you are covering your own costs.

5.) Transportation

  • To/From Airport: Airport transportation arrangements will be confirmed shortly and details will be sent to all participants.
  • Taxi service is available from the PlesoAirport, Zagreb to all hotels. You may book a taxi in the arrivals section of the airport. Arrange price before entering the cab. The rate to/from airport is 180 kunas. For those interested, ICBL can make arrangements with specific drivers who guarantee this rate. Please email as soon as possible at wotten@icbl.org
  • A shuttle service is also available from the airport to main bus terminal in city centre. The service is organised by Croatian airlines and runs from 7:00AM to 20:00PM. The shuttle departs every 30 minutes. Please note that after 20:00PM buses will leave after each new landing. The fare is 25 kunas. Once arrived at the bus terminal, you will have to take the tram across the bus station. Trams number 6 or number 2 towards direction CRVUMFREC will take you nearby the hotel. The rate for a ticket is 8 kunas; you may buy your ticket on the tram. For those going to the Palace hotel, you will have to take the tram number 6 and hop off at the fourth stop. For the ones staying at the Astoria and Arcotel, you may take number 2 and 6, and will have to hop off at the third stop, in front of the train station.
  • Local Transportation: Information on transportation to/from the conference venue will be provided shortly.
  • Taxis can be hired in front of all hotels and at the conference venue.

Reasonable prices:

  1. Airport to hotels: 180 kunas
  2. Hotels to conference venue: 50 kunas
  3. Average rate for locations within the city: 30/50 kunas

6.) Venues

  • The 6th Meeting of States Parties to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty will be held at the Zagreb Fairgrounds, located approximately 5 kilometers from city, along the Sava river. The Fairgrounds are located on Avenija Dubrovnik 15, 10 020 Zagreb. Side events and activities will take place at venues throughout Zagreb:

7.) UN Passes

  • All 6MSP participants require official UN passes to enter the conference venue. Passes can be picked up at the ICBL orientation Meeting on 27 November, from 11:00 to 13:00 at the Student Centre. Please carry photo identification with you at the Zagreb Fairgrounds. A photocopy of your passport will suffice.

8.) ICBL Activities

  • The ICBL orientation meeting will take place on Sunday, 27 November from 11:00-13:00 at the Student Centre. We encourage all campaigners and researchers to participate in this meeting to prepare for the week’s events.
  • ICBL morning briefings will be held from 28th November - 2nd December from 9:00 –10:00. All campaigners are urged to fully participate in these important daily briefings. They provide an opportunity to strategize and organize lobbying activities, to report on activities and efforts, to review events from the previous day, to make announcements and to prepare for the current day of activities.
  • On 3 December, from 9:00 – 17:00 at the Dubrovnik Hotel, we are holding “ICBL Planning Workshop”. The meeting will help chart the campaign’s path forward for the coming year.
  • To celebrate at the end of a very full week we are planning a campaign celebration for the evening of 3 December. Come prepared to kick back, eat, drink, dance and have some fun!

10.) Translation

  • The UN will provide translation for all six official UN languages during official 6MSP meetings. For non-English-speaking campaigners, we will rely on your fellow campaigners and outside assistance when needed to provide translation during other ICBL activities and side events. If you any questions about translation that will be provided, or are willing to offer your services to help translate, please contact andre@icbl.org

11.) Communications

  • Telephone, fax and email connections in the ICBL office will solely be for official use by ICBL staff or for official ICBL business with prior approval by a staff member. However, there are numerous communications options:

Mobile phones:

  • SIM cards for unlocked GSM mobile phones can be purchased in Zagreb for approximately 120 kunas (20USD).
  • Mobile phones are not available for rental.
  • We recommend using the T-Com phone company.
  • International calling cards may be purchased at all post offices and many stores throughout Zagreb. They may be used with pay phones, hotel phones and mobile phones. International rates depend on the country called.

Email:

  • Fairgrounds: Internet services are available at the conference venue. Location to be confirmed later on.
  • Best Western Astoria: Internet is available at the Business Centre. High-speed Internet is also available in rooms.
  • Palace Hotel Zagreb: Dial up Internet available in rooms.
  • Arcotel Allegra: Dial up Internet available in rooms and wireless in hotel lobby.
  • Internet Cafés: Internet cafés are located throughout Zagreb. Recommended cyber cafés are listed below:
    • Ch@rlie’s: Ljudevita Gaja 4a - Mon-Sat: 08:00-22:00 -Friendly and helpful staff; close to Best Western Astoria and Palace Hotel.
    • Iskon Internet: Petra Preradovica 5 - Mon – Sat: 8:00-23 :00 and Sun: 12:00-23:00 - 15kn/hour
    • Mama: Preradoviceva 18 - Mon-Sat: 12:00-24 :00 - 10kn/hour

12.) Reimbursements – for ICBL sponsored guests only

  • Please provide your full travel details and estimated costs before arrival. We must have your estimated travel costs before arrival or we will not be able to guarantee reimbursement in Zagreb.
  • We will be issuing per diems and travel reimbursements throughout the week. An accounting schedule will be available in your welcome pack

Per Diems:

  • To receive your per diem you must provide the ICBL with a photocopy of your plane ticket and the original copy of all other travel receipts. We cannot provide reimbursement for expenses without receipts.
  • Once we receive your receipts your per diem will be issued. The per diem rate is 25USD per day/13USD per half day.

Reimbursements:

  • The ICBL will reimburse the following costs: economy round-trip plane ticket to Zagreb, local transportation to/from airport in country of origin, airport departure taxes and visa expenses.
  • The ICBL will directly cover the cost of accommodation in Zagreb.
  • The ICBL will NOT cover these costs: travel insurance, additional expenses in hotel rooms such as laundry, mini bar service, telephone calls, faxes, taxi fares or for extended stays before or after meetings.
  • If you must spend a night in transit at a hotel you should confirm with us in advance. For expenses during travel such as meals during layovers, the ICBL will reimburse up to the equivalent of one day per diem for meals on a case-by-case basis.

13.)Quick Facts:

Weather: Average temperature in Zagreb in November/December range from –2°C to 4°C. Winter has started in Croatia. Snow falls are scheduled for next week – bring warm clothes.

What to Wear: Warm woollen clothes and shoes. Bring warm coat, scarf, gloves hats and socks.

Local Time: GMT+1 hour.

Language: Croatia’s official language is Croatian. Other language spoken: German, Italian and English.

Business Hours:

Businesses and Offices: 8:00 – 18:00, Monday to Friday
Bank hours: 8:00-19:00, Monday to Friday and 8:00-12:00 on Saturdays

Currency: The currency used in Croatia is the Croatian Kuna (Kn). Notes are issued in denominations of Kn 500, Kn 200, Kn 100, Kn 50, Kn 20, Kn 10, Kn 5. There are 5, 2 and 1 Kn coins. Most foreign currencies and traveller checks can be changed at banks, hotels and currency changers. All major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Zagreb and automated teller machines (ATMs) are located throughout the city and accept both Cirrus and Plus cards.

Exchange Rate:

1 USD = 6.18kn
1 EUR = 7.43kn

Electricity: The electric system is 220W, 50Hz. Guests from Northern America will need to use a transformer to run electrical appliances.
