The Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, the First Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, is quickly approaching. Following is information to help you begin to plan your participation in this important event, being held 29 November- 3 December 2004 in Nairobi, Kenya. Further details to help facilitate your planning will be sent in the coming weeks and months. This memo will focus on logistical and travel preparations, while other memos have been sent and will continue to be sent focused on our messages, lobbying and advocacy priorities and media strategy.

The Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, the First Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, will be held 29 November - 3 December 2004 at the United Nations in Nairobi, Kenya.
As you all know, the Nairobi Summit is a major milestone in the life of the Treaty. Hundreds of participants including world leaders, government ministers, NGOs, international organizations, youth and UN agencies will gather in Nairobi for the Summit as well as numerous side events. It has already brought new impetus to all of us working to rid the world of antipersonnel landmines, but we need to keep our momentum all year to ensure we meet our goals for the Summit and beyond!

Over 200 campaigners, researchers, survivors, deminers and youth from around the world are expected to participate in the Nairobi Summit. The ICBL has official non-delegate status and will participate fully in the Nairobi Summit and will make interventions and presentations throughout. We will coordinate our input via Working Group chairs and encourage you to contact them or any ICBL staff with specific messages.

The ICBL has been asked to coordinate all side events of members, so please let me know by 6 July if you intend to organize any side event or by 12 July if you wish to hold any exhibition.
As the ICBL must coordinate all ICBL members' registration for the Nairobi Summit, all ICBL members participating in the Nairobi Summit must register online at http://www.icbl.org/nairobisummit/registration as soon as possible and no later than 30 September. Upon completion of the online form participants will receive an email stating that registration has been successfully submitted. Please note that you will need to complete all details when registering, including flight information, so please book your travel as soon as possible to ensure smooth registration. Should you have any difficulties registering using the online form please contact nairobisummit@icbl.org.
The ICBL is able to sponsor the participation of a limited number of ICBL campaigners and researchers. Those receiving sponsorship should be receiving their ICBL invitation letters by email and fax within the coming week. Please wait until after you have received this invitation to register online. We regret that we cannot accept additional requests for sponsorship due to funding constraints, but encourage others to raise their own travel funds. You are responsible for securing your Kenyan visa and any required transit visas. The ICBL is anticipating updates on visa procedures shortly and will send detailed information as soon as it becomes available. We kindly ask that you refrain from applying for visas until we have further information on application procedures.
Useful Online Resources:
All visitors to Kenya coming from infected areas require a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter the country. A list of yellow fever infected countries is available online at http://www.who.int/ith/chapter05_10.html#yellowfever Visitors should be vaccinated at least 10 days prior to departure.
The following vaccinations are not required to enter Kenya, but are recommended by the World Health Organization: Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, Tetanus, Polio and Typhoid.
The ICBL is waiting for additional information about vaccinations required for Nairobi Summit participants and will provide updated information as soon as it becomes available.
The ICBL has made block bookings at the Anglican Church of Kenya Guesthouse, Fairview Hotel and Panafric Hotel for ICBL members. All three hotels are within a one block radius of each other and are located just outside the city centre. The ICBL will make room bookings for ICBL participants at these hotels only. Bookings at other hotels must be made directly by participants.
All sponsored participants will be staying at the Anglican Church of Kenya Guesthouse and the Panafric Hotel. Non-sponsored guests may book rooms at either of these hotels or the Fairview Hotel. Please indicate your hotel preference on your registration form and note that while the ICBL will try to accommodate your first choice, it cannot be guaranteed. If you wish to book a room at one of these three hotels, please contact the ICBL directly for your booking, not the hotel. Please note that none of these hotels have wheelchair accessible rooms. Sponsored guests should keep in mind that you will be asked to share a room with another campaigner of the same gender. The ICBL will cover the cost of your room but you must pay for all extra costs including telephone calls, Internet access, mini-bar, laundry, etc. All hotels have been notified that non-sponsored guests will be covering all their own costs.
