Voices from the Ground: Landmine and Explosive Remnants of War Survivors Speak Out on Victim Assistance.Handicap International, 2009.

The first ever report surveying survivors’ opinions on assistance. The survey was completed in July 2009 and includes questionnaires and data from 1,645 survivors in 25 affected countries, as well as recommendations on the way forward.

Assisting Landmines Survivors: A Decade of Efforts A symposium marking the 10th Anniversary of the Vienna Meeting on the Convention for the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines, 12 February 2007, Vienna. Handicap International, 2007

This symposium, organized by the Austrian government, intended to review 10 years of efforts in assisting landmine survivors and was dedicated to all concerns and dimensions of victim assistance. The meeting was the first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of the year in which the Mine Ban Treaty was negotiated and signed.

This document is the third edition in a series, the first having been produced in 2005 to monitor progress in the achievement of victim assistance goals outlined in the Nairobi Action Plan for the period 2005 through 2009.

Recommendations for the victim assistance provisions of a treaty banning cluster munitions: a practitioners’ perspective. Handicap International, 2007

The result of an electronic discussion and workshop through which Handicap International, Landmine Survivors Network, other civil society organizations and UN agencies identified common recommendations for the victim assistance provisions in a treaty banning cluster munitions.

2006

First national landmine victim assistance workshop. UN Mine Action Centre, 2006

The primary aim of the workshop was to enable the Government of Afghanistan, in collaboration with relevant ministries and other key stakeholders in the disability sector, to develop a plan of action for the period 2006-2009 to address the needs of mine victims and other persons with disabilities. This plan of action was represented to the Seventh Meeting of the States Parties (7MSP) to the AP Mine Ban convention in September 2006. Other objectives were to raise awareness of the rights and needs of people with disabilities in Afghanistan, and to provide the relevant ministries with a clear picture of the benchmarks and their responsibilities.

Gulu District: Landmine/ERW Victims. Survey Report, 2006

The main objective of the research is to accurately identify landmine and ERW victims in Gulu District, noting the conditions that led to the incidents, details about the victims, and specific areas where the incidents occurred.

Landmine victim assistance in integrated mine action in Cambodia. BAILEY, Sheree, 2005.

The purpose of the research was to inform the Integrated Mine Action (IMA) thematic group on the situation of landmine/UXO survivors and the families of those killed or injured, and other people with disabilities in mine-affected communities. An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of current policies and programs and recommend approaches for enhancing the quality of life of this group within their community can also be found in this document.

2004

Research into mine victim assistance. Standing Tall Australia, 2004.

This research project was undertaken by Standing Tall Australia to raise awareness of the rights and needs of mine survivors and other persons with disabilities in mine-affected countries. The final report analyses the status and implementation of legislation protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in selected mined-affected States, examines the issues and advances in the socio-economic reintegration of landmine survivors and documents some of the programs addressing the psychological rehabilitation and social reintegration of landmine survivors.

This policy is intended to provide direction to UN mine action programmes and centres and to provide a framework and guidance for all other mine action organizations and authorities who engage in mine action field operations.

The Role of Mine Action in Victim Assistance. GICHD, 2002.

This report identifies how mine action can best contribute to ensuring that mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) survivors receive all necessary assistance. The contributors examine the provision of assistance to mine and UXO victims in the five different cases of Cambodia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kosovo and Nicaragua. Each case study had a different story to tell.

This report explores the principles and effective approaches to working with children affected by landmine injuries. It gives examples of programs that put these principles into action and draws attention to the rights of children, discrimination, access to services and rehabilitation, and attitudes towards people with disabilities
