09h30 Media Briefing: Global Landmine Monitor Report 2002 Release
ICBL representatives will release the fourth annual report by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and discuss key findings, just ahead of its official presentation to the Fourth Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty. The Landmine Monitor Report addresses issues, including: Who is still using antipersonnel mines? Does production and trade of antipersonnel mines continue? 10h00 Media Briefing: Opening of the Fourth Meeting of States Parties
ICBL representatives, Stephen Goose (Head of ICBL Delegation to the Meeting) and Jody Williams (ICBL Ambassador and co-recipient with the ICBL of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize), together with representatives of the incoming and outgoing Presidents of the Meeting of State Parties, will talk about their hopes for the Meeting which opens later that day.Venue: Room 24, Building E, UN Palais des Nations, Geneva.
11h30 Photo opportunity with Jody Williams and Golda the mine detection dog
Golda, the German Shepherd is a working mine detection dog and was given to Jody Williams when she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Williams in turn donated her to the Norwegian People's Aid, an organisation in the ICBL that is involved in mine action, who have used her in their work in the minefields of Kosovo and Bosnia.Venue: in the gardens of the Palais des Nations or nearby (exact location to be confirmed at media briefing).
15h00 Opening Ceremony
Speeches from dignitaries, including President of Switzerland Kaspar Villiger and Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, and a dance display will form part of the opening proceedings. The theme of the Meeting is: "Every Step Counts" or "Chaque pas compte".Venue: Salles Des Assembles, UN Palais des Nations, Geneva
16h00 - 18h00 Opening Session
The official meeting will begin immediately following the Opening Ceremony. The President-Designate of the Meeting is Ambassador Jean Lint of Belgium, and Executive-Secretary is Mr Enrique Roman-Morey of the United Nations Department for Disarmament Affairs. Ambassador Christian Faessler of Switzerland will serve as Secretary-General for coordination of the opening ceremonies and all side events. ICBL Ambassador Jody Williams will address the delegates at this opening session.Venue: Salles Des Assembles, UN Palais des Nations, Geneva

Mine-toons: An Exhibition of Editorial Cartoons
Handicap International, one of the founding organisations of the ICBL, has put together an exhibition of editorial cartoons published worldwide about the antipersonnel landmine issue. The exhibition will be displayed in two venues: the Espace Foyer of the University of Geneva Uni Mall, which will be open to the public and the foyer of the Palais des Nations, accessible to the participants of the Fourth Meeting of States Parties.

Australian photographer, John Rodsted presents an exhibition about the mine and unexploded ordnance problem facing Afghanistan and the efforts to address this in the attempt to rebuild and reconstruct the country after a quarter of a century of war.

15h30 Media Briefing: Non State Actors and the mine ban
A briefing for the media will follow a lunchtime roundtable with governments and non state actors on the Mine Ban Treaty (the latter is closed to the media). At the media briefing, speakers from the ICBL and Geneva Call will sum up the outcomes of the roundtable and reflect on the importance of non state actors embracing the ban.Panelists at the roundtable, who will be available for interviews independently, include representatives of: the government of the Philippines, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A).
