Side Events - Memo 1

The ICBL presence at the 6MSP is very important not only as a group, but also in terms of messages. The ICBL has always tried to bring the reality closer to the diplomatic fora through the various side events organised along the margins of the conference. This year we will do the same!

Please find below the many events already planned for this MSP

We have grouped the events in 5 categories, mainly to ease the organisational work.

  1. Workshops ( more than 3 hours long)

  5. briefing/debates ( around 1-2 Hours)

  • "Mine Action in the Midst of Internal Conflict"
Civilians are the first victims of the widespread use of anti-personnel mines in internal armed conflicts involving Non-State Actors, so it is crucial that mine action be undertaken at the earliest stages.Who are the actors involved? • Maps reading : another way to see the evolution of the mine problem
Map is a tool to give information of course, about any subject. In these times when so much information come and disappear as tides, I wanted to find a mean to stay and understand quietly a question. Mapping offers this mean to take the good distance on a problem: everything is a question of scale. Everybody uses maps, few people know exactly how and by who these maps are done. Also, maps reflect wills and technologies of their period. And they are not as often used as they should be. Map becomes a way to understand any fact, from any discipline through another angle of approach. For Zagreb, the idea is to offer to journalists and any people, a different way to find arguments to continue to right and explain about all subjects raised by landmine questions, during the Conference.
Briefing/discussion: provide participants ways to use maps and to read them, how to compare from a year to another , how maps reading can help you building your understanding of the evolution of a situation. Example will be taken using Maps of the region and LM maps over the years.
