AMERICAS: A FORGOTTEN CONTINENT? The Continuing Challenges Posed By Landmines in the Western Hemisphere

The Americas is one of the regions with the highest rates of Mine Ban Convention membership in the world but because the scale of the problem is more limited there than in other areas, international attention is increasingly turning away from the Americas.

Cuba and the USA are the only American nations that remain outside of the treaty. The main issues in this region concern treaty implementation – especially mine clearance - and victim assistance as it is home to seven mine affected nations. Unfortunately, because the scale of the problem is more limited there than in other areas such as Afghanistan or Cambodia international attention is increasingly turning away from the Americas. The end result? These nations are left alone to face the outstanding burdens of treaty implementation.
