On 27 October in Nairobi, two-time Olympic medalist and four-time world cross country champion Paul Tergat of Kenya announced that he will be supporting the Nairobi Summit by running in the Nairobi 10km Road Race for a Mine-Free World. Ethiopia's legendary Haile Gebreselassie and Adere Berhane, who recently won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

The Nairobi Road Race for a Mine Free World aims to create awareness of the landmines issue and raise funds to support mine action projects. As a country known globally for its superb long distance runners, Kenya is the natural place to bring together runners to rally around the call for a mine-free world.

The participation of Ethiopian runners in this event is very significant as Ethiopia is affected by landmines and remains the only country in Sub-Saharan African that has not ratified the Mine Ban Treaty. Public awareness generated by this event will generate local and international support for the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, being held 29 November - 3 December in Nairobi.
