Transit Visa Information for Major Connections to Nairobi

The following list has been prepared to help you plan your travel to Nairobi and ensure you have appropriate visas. Once you have made your airtravel reservations, and we encourage you to do so as soon as possible, please note carefully which country/countries you are transiting through and consult the following list to determine whether you need a transit visa in order to change planes. By consulting the list of countries, and list of which nationalities require transit visas for those countries, you should be able to prepare your travel and necessary visas. It is your responsibility to obtain all necessary transit visas, and please do so in a timely manner. If you need assistance, please contact nairobisummit@icbl.org.

Schengen Countries

(Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden)

The following are exempt from, or do not require, a Transit Visa:

  • Nationals of Schengen countries
  • Persons with a residence permit for a European Union member state
  • Persons in direct transit by air without leaving the airport (unless specified on the following list)

Must have Transit Visa (even if not leaving the airport):

  • Nationals of Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bangladesh, Congo, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Turkey

United Arab Emirates

Exempt from Transit Visa:

  • Persons in direct transit by air without leaving the airport

United States

Exempt from Transit Visa (provided you have a machine-readable passport):

  • Nationals of Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
  • Note: If nationals of the above countries do not have a machine-readable passport, they must obtain a US visa.

Must have C-1 Transit Visa:

  • All other foreign nationals traveling through the US to another foreign destination.

United Kingdom

Exempt from Transit Visa:

  • Persons in direct transit by air without leaving the airport (unless specified on the following list)
  • Persons with a valid US or Canadian visa
  • Persons with a valid EU residence permit
  • Persons with a US Permanent Resident Card (issued after 21 April 1998) or a Canadian Permanent Resident Card (issued after 28 June 2002)

Must have Transit Visa (even if not leaving the airport):
