Saturday 27 November

  • ICBL’s Working Group on Non-State Actors briefs the public and the media on efforts to persuades rebel groups to give up antipersonnel mines.

Sunday 28 November

10:00 – 12:30 Survivor Summit, Intercontinental Hotel

  • Shot of landmine survivors – in wheelchairs, on crutches or with other less visible injuries – welcoming diplomats to the discussion.
  • Survivors from 30 countries get personal and political: sharing their own stories and calling for greater attention for the needs and rights of landmine survivors around the world.
  • High-level diplomats from seven countries, seated face-to-face with the survivors, listen and respond to their calls.

  • Dancers, local music and a colourful backdrop set the stage for the opening speakers
  • The Nairobi Summit is the first review conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, now in its fifth year and the most significant event since its opening for signature in Ottawa in December 1997. Decisions taken at the Summit will affect the ability of mine-affected countries to tackle their problems of mine clearance and assistance for survivors. All ICBL spokespeople representing all geographic regions of the world, will be available for interview.

  • Heads of State and Ministers of Treaty member states make pledges for their work for a mine-free world
  • Observers from non-treaty member states address the Summit: some of the key ‘hold out’ countries are expected to be amongst these, including possibly China and India amongst others.
  • Co-laureate Jody Williams of the ICBL, representatives from the first-ever youth international mine action capacity-building symposium and a representative from the Survivor Summit deliver statements to world leaders.

13:30 – 15:00 Launch of the international “Working with Youth in Mine Action Manual”, UN, Lower outside lawn in tent

  • The Governor-General of Canada will officially launch the “Working with Youth in Mine Action” manual put together by the Youth Mine Action Ambassador Program and Mines Action Canada with contributions from campaigners around the world
  • The Governor-General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson, is presented with a copy of the manual by a youth symposium representative signed by all contributors from around the world
  • Interviews with any of the 39 youth from 23 countries or campaign contributors about the importance of youth involvement in mine action

Friday 3 December

14:30 – 15:00 International Day of Disabled Persons celebration, United Nations Office at Nairobi, near Room 2

Photo/interview opportunities:

  • Landmines survivors from 30 countries celebrate International Day of Disabled Persons: handing out cake to Summit delegates as they file past for the closing session.
  • The 45 survivors will take part in the Nairobi Summit and are available for interviews about their story and a first-hand perspective on the successes and challenges of efforts to ban antipersonnel mines.
  • Provision for the needs of survivors is a unique feature of the Mine Ban Treaty.
