Mine Risk Education Sub-Working Group

The creation of an ICBL Mine Risk Education Sub-Working Group was decided during a meeting of the ICBL Mine Action Working Group held on 13 September 1999. The ICBL Mine Risk Education Sub-Working Group (initially called Mine Awareness Sub-Working Group) was created because of a lack of focus on the specific issue of mine risk education (MRE). The ICBL Mine Risk Education Sub-Working Group operates within the framework of the ICBL Mine Action Working Group.

The main objective of the Group is to serve as a resource on mine risk education issues to the ICBL and others.

The following goals were adopted at the ICBL General Meeting in Washington DC 6-7 March 2001, as part of the ICBL 2004 Action Plan:

  • Advocate, monitor and provide guidance to the international community as to where/what/how mine risk education is needed.
  • Advocate for and maintain a higher profile of mine risk education in Standing Committees, Meetings of States Parties and the Mine Action community.
  • Advocate and encourage development of more programs and improved sustainability of programs.
  • Promote improvements in the quality of mine risk education programs.

Members of the Group include representatives from the following campaigns and organisations: Colombian Campaign to Ban Landmines, Handicap International (Belgium and France), Indian Campaign to Ban Landmines, Intersos, Landmines Resource Centre (Lebanon), Mines Advisory Group, Norwegian Peoples Aid, Pakistan Campaign to Ban Landmines, Rädda Barnen, RaDO, Thai Campaign to Ban Landmines, Ugandan Campaign to Ban Landmines... and also ICBL staff members.
