Suriname Destroys Half Its Stockpile of Mines

On 26 February 2004 Suriname destroyed 146 out of its total stockpile of 296 antipersonnel mines. Suriname will retain 150 mines for training.

Participants in the stockpile destruction ceremony included Landmine Monitor Researcher for Suriname Sheila Ketwaru-Nurmohamed; Mr. Anton Smith, Honorary Consul of Canada; Mr. Lane, OAS; the Red Cross and the government Landmine Commission. The event received national and international press coverage.
