Landmine Monitor seeks Copy Editor

Landmine Monitor is looking for a Copy Editor to be responsible for editing approximately 119 country and area research reports as well as thematic overviews (approximately 1,100 pages of text) to ensure consistency in style, formatting and language.

Contract Period: 26-28 March 2008 and 16 June to 12 September 2008

 

Consultant Fee: Negotiable

Landmine Monitor is the research and monitoring initiative of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and the de facto monitoring regime for the Mine Ban Treaty. It monitors and reports on States Parties’ implementation of and compliance with the Mine Ban Treaty, and more generally, assesses the international community’s response to the humanitarian problem caused by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). The Landmine Monitor project represents the first time in history that NGOs have come together in a coordinated, systematic and sustained way to monitor a humanitarian law or disarmament treaty, and to regularly document progress and problems, thereby successfully putting into practice the concept of civil society-based verification.

Position Summary:

Mines Action Canada (MAC), an ICBL member organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the Landmine Monitor project. As part of the final editing team, the Landmine Monitor Copy Editor is responsible for editing approximately 119 country and area research reports as well as thematic overviews (approximately 1,100 pages of text) to ensure consistency in style, formatting and language.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a line edit of approximately 1,100 pages of text, ensuring that all reporting is consistent with the Landmine Monitor editing and proofreading guide, is internally consistent, and in publishable quality, US English.
  • Provide additional editing assistance to the final editing team as required.
  • Participate in regular meetings of the final editing team.

 

 

 

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree or relevant work experience;
  • Strong (native fluency) English-language writing and editing skills;
  • At least five years experience copy editing large reports, with extensive experience editing disarmament-related publications;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word including advanced functions (i.e. styles and footnoting), internet and email proficiency;
  • Strong inter-cultural communication skills;
  • The ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a team;
  • Functions well under pressure, can handle numerous tasks simultaneously and excellent time management skills;
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • The ability to be creative, flexible and adaptable;
  • Must be able to work sometimes long, non-traditional hours;
  • Must be available to participate in an Editorial Team meeting from 25-28 March in Ottawa, Canada.
