After the accident...
If they survive, victims face
enormous challenges
.
Treatment and rehabilitation
is painful and costly and may be needed on an ongoing basis. Prostheses, for example, get worn out and need replacing or repair.
Victims may also face considerable
psychological trauma
and, if untreated, this can result in further difficulties.
Many landmine survivors face
social exclusion
. For example, they may not be seen as fit to marry. Child victims may never return to school. Families of victims and survivors also suffer.
Landmine survivors may
struggle to make a living
after their accident: farming may become unworkable or travelling to work or for studies impossible. Vocational training and support is often unavailable.
