Action Alert for India and Pakistan: Stop Laying Mines, India

Author/Origin: Liz Bernstein banemnowSPAMFLTER@SPATMFLTERicbl.org

(Monday 07 January 2002 Washington DC) Following reports in the media and from Indian and Pakistan Campaign to Ban Landmines colleagues that Indian troops are laying new antipersonnel landmines along the border with Pakistan, ICBL condemned this use, sent an Open Letter to Prime Minister Vajpayee urging India to refrain from laying antipersonnel landmines and to declare this publicly, and issued this Action Alert.

In addition to an Open Letter to Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee, ICBL has also written Pakistan's President Musharraf, calling for clarification on whether Pakistan has laid new landmines on the border and urging Pakistan to state publicly that they will refrain from using landmines.

We urge you to:

  • Write, fax, call or visit the Ambassador of India in your country NOW and let them know that using landmines is unacceptable.
  • If there is no embassy in your country, write the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister or the Ambassador to the UN (all contacts listed below).
  • Also contact Pakistan embassies to urge them not to use landmines and to declare it publicly.
  • Urge your government, particularly if it is a party to the treaty, to oppose any use of antipersonnel landmines by India or Pakistan.
