Job Opportunity - Communications Officer (English Native Speaker or Equivalent) - Deadline for applications: 17 February 2008

Position title: Communications Officer

Location: Negotiable

Reports to: Advocacy Director

Contract period: Annual, renewable

Special requirements: English native language or equivalent

The Communications Officer will work under the supervision of the ICBL’s Advocacy Director and in cooperation with other staff members to ensure the implementation of the ICBL’s media and communications strategies as tools to promote the Campaign’s goals on landmines and cluster munitions. The Communications Officer will be responsible for the production of communications and campaigning materials, including content for the website, and will act as main media contact. The Communications Officer will also provide support to national campaigns in the development and implementation of their media and communications strategies as appropriate. Due to the nature of the job, English native language or equivalent level is required.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to:

MEDIA

  • Maintaining and updating media lists
  • Responding to media enquiries
  • Identifying proactively media opportunities
  • Preparing and distributing media materials and kits
  • Coordinating interviews for ICBL spokespeople
  • Coordinating ICBL media work at international conferences, under supervision of the Advocacy Director
  • Supervising the compilation of media reports by interns
  • Supporting national campaigns in their media work
  • Liaising with ICBL partners on media
  • Supervising the work of interns to ensure maintenance and updating of the photo and audio-visual archives, as well as responses to requests for audio-visual materials

 

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Coordinating the production of a quarterly newsletter and periodic updates for members
  • Coordinating the production of communications and campaigning materials, including A/V resources
  • Supporting the ICBL team in their communications needs including proposal/reports to donors and preparing presentations and speeches

 

WEBSITE

  • Provide - under the supervision of the Advocacy and Treaty Implementation Directors - regular, updated content for the website
  • Liaise with the web maintenance team to facilitate achievement of the ICBL’s goals
  • Develop, in cooperation with the web maintenance team, electronic campaigning tools and special sections of the website where appropriate
  • Create, maintain and update a media room on the website

 

OTHER

  • Supervising interns

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have at least three years relevant experience in a media relations / communications/ campaigning environment; strong demonstrated oral and written communications skills. Due to the nature of the job, a level of English equivalent to native language is required, as is knowledge of at least another language. Experience of working with NGO coalitions and networks - preferably in the disarmament or humanitarian fields - international government relations experience, and knowledge of the landmine and cluster munitions issues and knowledge of the ICBL are desirable.

The candidate should have strong demonstrated organizational skills and strong computer literacy, including working knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, Email, Internet and knowledge of, or willingness to learn, web posting. Candidates must be creative, self-motivated, well organized, and able to function under pressure and handle numerous tasks simultaneously. The candidate must be willing to take initiative, work with minimum supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team. The position might require extensive international travel.

The location of the Communications Officer is negotiable, but preferably Europe-based. It is a one year position, with the possibility of extension. The person may be hired on either a 1 year consultancy or 1 year staff contract basis. Remuneration will be in accordance with the ICBL pay scales and commensurate with experience.
