People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

Since World War II, the number of civilians killed and injured in various wars and conflicts has steadily and dramatically increased. The use of these weapons causes death and injuries to continue to be inflicted on civilians, even long after a war or conflict ends. This is technologically enhanced barbarism with a complete absence of ethics.

Living in fear of death or mutilation of a limb is a reality that no one should have to live. Although the cause of my amputation is drastically different from those which have occured do to landmine misuse, i feel for the victims whose lives will be forever changed. In america, amputations do not, or, should not connote disability, however, in less developed countries such as cambodia, the amputations are likely to result in joblessness and fatal poverty.

Landmines, obviously, are horrible things. They have landmines looking like toys specially made to blow up children.

i think america should sign the ottawa treaty because we were the first country to support landmine ban however when the ottowa treaty came around we were quick to disaprove of it and i feel america is not doing anything to stop the all teh innocent people from being killed all around the world in fact i think we are helping the spread of landmines more than stoping it because the united states has exported over 5.5 million anti personal mines to 38 countries and has the third largest stockpile in the world

When will the world open it's eyes to the fact that war is about the alterior motive of governments; That in thousands of years the only outcome is the death and sufferance of peoples, animals and "our" environment on both "sides" of "any" given conflict. Perhaps we all should embrace a different perspective, a notion of a world without borders, in which we are fighting with ourselves. THe paradox is that wars happen out of the stupor of apparent intelligence. If we can be content with what we have, and stop the purchase of governmental and corporational lies. Perhaps we then may have a chance of surviving ourselves. {copyright, all rights reserved, tashi james, 2006}

It is my belief that when innocent civilians are killed or wounded in war, the responsibility for these unjustifiable acts falls on the persons, and nation that dropped the Bomb, fired the Missle, planted the Land Mine, ect. ect. (we have many ways to kill). We can no longer allow politicians to justify killing innocent people, to reach what they deem as larger objectives. Mines in particular are insidious because they continue to kill and injure long after the initial conflict is over, when everyone is a non-combatant. When innocent people are harmed, we need to tell our leaders that we no longer accept the psychotic justification of the enemy made me do it. It is time for humanity to grow past our barbaric past.

I implore Israel to give Lebanon maps of all the Land Mines left there. And, if there are maps of land mines held by any other nation, I ask you to also give those maps to the proper authorities, including the United Nations. Finally I ask all nations to stop the use of these terrible, insidious weapons.

No one should feel immune to the indiscriminate lethality of landmines -eliminating the threat of unexploded ordnances in all the world's countries, as well as the continued use of mines, must be made a joint cause of humanity. We can make the yearly maiming and killing of thousands of innocent men, women and children a thing of the past -if we make the effort.

I am fortunate to live in South Africa; the first country to voluntarily give up its Nuclear capability. I live in Africa, which has more than its fair share of problems of landmines brought here, by so called developed countries. I work in the Disability Sector; to me it is worse than barbaric to produce and reserve the right to use indiscriminate weapons that by design create more and more people with disabilities. Countries that are not signatories to this act should hang their heads in shame. I for one will try not to buy any other products or produce from any non signatory country.

I have recently been to cambodia, and for such a beautiful and friendly country, it has had a horrific past. The war has been over for 25 years and it is still causing destruction. I saw a child who lost his arms and a leg because of a landmine. This brought a tears to my eye. What is this child going to do now? How can he write with no arms? How can he play football with 1 leg? Who will employ him? With help he has a chance to fulfill some of his potential, because every child deserves the same chance in life. We would not accept this in our own country, lets not accept it in any other.

I feel that all forms of hate-weapons, cluster bombs, landmines, depleted uranium, WMD's, MOAB's, etc, should be unilaterally dismantled and disposed of-FOREVER. Until this world and all its peoples remain in a 'war mentality' we are little more than children playing with matches and the parents are not watching. That is scary. Until we stop production, dismantle what we now have and discard any future plans to create any hate-weapons, there can be no hope for the future. All nations must stop creating weapons of death and destruction or we will have no world left that is not contaminated and unlivable. Humanity must rise above itself or be doomed. I hope we can rise above ourselves.
