Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, did not participate in the Ottawa Process and has not signed the Mine Ban Treaty. It is not a member of the United Nations, but as a state it can sign if it chooses. Tuvalu has no defense force and is not believed to have ever produced, transferred, stockpiled or used antipersonnel landmines. The islands of Tuvalu were the scene of heavy fighting during World War Two resulting in unexploded ordnance in some locations, however Tuvalu is not believed to be mine-affected.[1] There are no known UXO awareness or clearance activities underway at present and civilian casualties to UXO are unknown.
