The Republic of Vanuatu signed the Mine Ban Treaty on 4 December 1997, but has still not ratified. Vanuatu was absent from the vote on pro-ban UN General Assembly Resolution 56/24M in November 2001. In March 2001, a government representative said that Vanuatu has no stockpiled mines.[1] It is not believed to be mine-affected, although there are still major dumps of military equipment left over from World War II.
