The Republic of Vanuatu signed the Mine Ban Treaty on 4 December 1997, but still has not ratified. Vanuatu sponsored, but was absent from the final vote on pro-ban UN General Assembly Resolution 57/74 in November 2002. In March 2001, a government representative said that Vanuatu has no stockpiled antipersonnel mines.[1] It is not believed to be mine-affected, although there are still major dumps of military equipment and other explosive remnants of war left over from World War II.
