Landmine Monitor Report 2007: Photo Challenge

We challenge you to find this year's Landmine Monitor cover photo! The person who provides us with the cover photo will receive a prize… let the competition begin…

We are also looking for photos for the Executive Summary. Please look through your digital photo albums, solicit photos from colleagues and partner organizations and send your best photos to lm@icbl.org by Friday 27 April.

What are we looking for?

Cover Photo

  • Was taken between May 2006 and April 2007
  • Shows that the Mine Ban Treaty is working
  • Focuses on a positive activity engaging landmine survivors OR actions being taken to meet Article 5 mine clearance obligations
  • Ideally the photo should be from the Middle East/ North Africa. We will also accept photos from the Americas, CIS and Europe
  • Is high resolution
  • Is a close-up that is simple and not too "busy" looking

Executive Summary

  • The mine problem in your community/ region;
  • What is being done to solve the mine problem and your contributions to mine action; and,
  • The link between landmines and broader issues including population movements, gender, youth, food security and development.

These do not have to be photos that you have taken. Please send us photos taken by your colleagues, partner organizations, the media, etc.

How should I select photos?

  • Select a few carefully chosen images. Look for the best quality photos that tell a story. Executive Summary photos are quite small on the printed page, so select photos without too many people in them or too much detail.
  • Do not select photos that if printed, would pose a security risk to you or any of the photo subjects. Do not put yourself into harm's way to take photographs.
  • Black and white as well as color photographs will be accepted.
  • Both electronic and hard copy photos will be accepted but we prefer high resolution, electronic photos.

How should I submit photos?

Electronic Photos

  • Your name
  • The photographer's name, agency and any copyright information
  • A full caption with as much detail about the photo as possible including biographies of people in photos, locations and situations captured on film to help provide context. Please ensure to secure the permission of photo subjects to have their image printed in Landmine Monitor Report 2007.
  • Attached high resolution photos to the email.

Hard Copy Photos

  • Prepare copies of photographs - please do not send originals.
  • Write your name on the back of the photograph.
  • Courier photos to: Mines Action Canada, 1502 - 1 Nicholas Street, Ottawa, ON K1R 5H8 Canada, Tel. +1-613-241-3777
  • Send an email to lm@icbl.org indicating the date photos were mailed to the MAC office and including all information about the photographs (see above - electronic photo submission information)
