ICBL Internship Position: April-September 2007

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) is looking for a full time Campaign Intern for its Geneva office. The internship will last approximately six months from April to September 2007 with start and end dates negotiable.

ICBL Actively Participates in First 10th Mine Ban Treaty Anniversary Event in Vienna on Victim Assistance

On 12 February, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines participated in a symposium organized by the Austrian government in Vienna entitled, “Assisting Landmine Survivors: A Decade of Efforts.” The meeting was the first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of the year in which the Mine Ban Treaty was negotiated and signed.

CMC Press Release re: Oslo Conference

A historic process to develop, negotiate and conclude a new treaty prohibiting cluster munitions that have unacceptable consequences for civilians was launched at a successful conference hosted by the Norwegian Foreign Minister in Oslo at a meeting of 49 states, the Cluster Munition Coalition said today.

Just ahead of the 1 March Anniversary, Indonesia becomes the 153rd State Party to the Mine Ban Treaty

On 20 February 2007, the Republic of Indonesia deposited its instrument of ratification to the United Nations, thus becoming the 153rd State Party to the Mine Ban Treaty. Indonesia was one of the original signatories of the Mine Ban Treaty in 1997.

Media advisory: Oslo, 20 -24 February 2007 - The international community convenes to launch a new treaty to stop cluster bombs

Ten years after the Nobel Prize winning campaign to ban landmines, some 40 governments and as many civil society organisations will meet in Oslo to launch an international process to ban cluster bombs that cause unacceptable humanitarian consequences. These preventable, predictable and unacceptable consequences have been increasingly brought to light by recent conflicts including in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans.

Cycling across South America for a Mine-free Colombia

The journey began on 10 December 2006 when three Colombians left Bogotá to bicycle to Ushuaia in Argentina, in a bid to support the Colombian Campaign to Ban Landmines and to draw international attention to their country’s extensive landmine problem.

Burma/Myanmar: Peace Talks Should Include Landmine Issue

As negotiations between the Burma/Myanmar ruling authorities and ethnic armed opposition group Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) took place in Yangon, the Thailand Campaign to Ban Landmines urged both parties to include in their talks measures to alleviate the suffering caused by landmines.

ICBL Urges Pakistan to Drop Plan to Lay Landmines on Afghan Border

The announcement, in late December 2006, that Pakistan was considering mining its border with Afghanistan, has sparked strong opposition worldwide. The ICBL has written to the Pakistani authorities urging them not to join the "club of shame" of mine users.

Job Opportunity: Advocacy and Campaigning Officer _Applications are now closed

ICBL is looking for an Advocacy and Campaigning Officer

The ICBL is proposing a new position to support ICBL national campaigns to integrate and implement advocacy on cluster munitions into their national plans and to enhance activities on implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty. This is a 12 month position from January through December 2007, with the possibility of extension. At the end of 2006, the ICBL made the decision to engage the Campaign on the cluster munition issue.

Angola Destroys Antipersonnel Landmine Stocks by 1 January 2007 Deadline

On 28 December 2006, Angola marked in a public ceremony the destruction and demilitarization of its known stock of antipersonnel landmines, thus meeting its 1 January 2007 deadline under Article 4 of the Mine Ban Treaty.
