Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize Co-Laureate, calls for stronger action to meet treaty obligations and assist survivors

Successful global launch of the ICBL’s 7th edition of the Landmine Monitor (LM) Report 2005 in Zagreb, Croatia

The Landmine Monitor Report 2005 mine action-focused global launch took place in Zagreb, Croatia, on 22 November 2005. The event was co-organized by ICBL, the Landmine Monitor mine action team and Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), and was attended by 70 representatives of the Croatian government and the diplomatic community, international organizations, and NGOs and the media. Croatia’s President, H.E. Stipe Mesic, attended the exhibition following the launch, and expressed gratitude to the organisers of events and their importance in drawing attention to the work yet to be completed.

Algerian President and ICBL Delegation Attend Algeria's Final Stockpile Destruction Event

On 21 November 2005, Algeria finished the destruction of its stockpile of antipersonnel mines with the explosion of 3030 mines in a public ceremony in Hassi Bahbah in the southwest of Algeria. Algeria completed its obligations under Article 4 four months before its 1 April 2006 deadline.

Use of Landmines and Number of Casualties Decrease But Immense Challenges Remain

Global use of antipersonnel mines and the number of reported mine casualties have fallen, according to the 1,053-page Landmine Monitor Report 2005-the seventh annual report by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). International funding for mine action increased to $399 million in 2004, and 135 square kilometers of mine-affected land were cleared.

Somali leader hands over his stockpile of landmines for destruction

Eng. Hussein Mohamed Aideed, Chairman of the United Somali Congress/Somali National Alliance (USC/SNA) and Deputy Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, announced his decision to hand over to Geneva Call all stockpiles under his control.

Guinea-Bissau destroys last of its landmine stockpile

On 17 October 2005, Guinea-Bissau completed the destruction of its antipersonnel mine stockpile, in compliance with its obligations under Article 4 of the Mine Ban Treaty.

Two Elephant Landmine Victims from Burma Arrive in Thailand

Elephant landmine victims from Burma's landmine infested forests close to the Thai border have been reported by the Landmine Monitor report almost every year since 1999. While cross border transportation of timber is questionably legal, cutting of the forest in the border areas of Burma has consistently taken place for the past 2 decades. Elephants trained in timber extraction in Thailand work in the forests across the border, and some are injured or killed by anti-personnel landmines.
