World Activists Go Back to Ottawa to Mark Mine Ban Treaty's 10th Anniversary

Mine action experts, landmine survivors, key political figures and civil society activists from around the world will return to Ottawa, Canada on 3 December to to mark the 10th anniversary of the historic day when the treaty banning the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of antipersonnel mines was signed.

1997-2007, Ten Years of the Mine Ban Treaty, A Success in Progress

In the 10th year from the adoption and signature of the Mine Ban Treaty, the ICBL considers the treaty to be a success. Palau Becomes State Party Number 156!

Palau's accession to the Mine Ban Treaty on 18 November 2007 brought the number of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty to 156. The announcement of the accession was made today, during the first day of the 8th Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Convention in Jordan.

Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty: Charting Progress and Challenges as Treaty Turns 10

Amman, 18 November 2007- Members of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) from over 60 countries are participating in the Eighth Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty, starting today by the shores of the Dead Sea in Jordan. During the meeting, over 1,000 delegates from governments, international agencies and civil society will discuss progress in the implementation of the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, which prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and trade of antipersonnel mines

MEDIA ADVISORY - Eighth Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty, Jordan 18-22 November

States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty will gather for their annual meeting by the shores of the Dead Sea in Jordan from 18 to 22 November. This is the first time a Meeting of States Parties takes place in the Middle East, where adherence to the treaty remains particularly low despite recent accessions by Kuwait and Iraq.

Bahrain Parliament Calls on Government to Join Mine Ban Treaty

Members of the Bahraini House of Representatives attending an ICBL workshop in Manama encouraged the government to submit draft legislation to accede to the Mine Ban Treaty and assured that this will encounter no opposition in Parliament.

Mine Ban Treaty, Real Protection for the Poor and Vulnerable

Geneva, 23 October 2007 – The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) today refuted a recent statement by Libyan leader Muhammar Gaddafi attacking the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and defending the use of landmines as a legitimate means of protection for “weak” countries.

India Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty

On September 27th the Indian Campaign to Ban Landmines commemorated the 10th Anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty. The event was marked by a conference with the participation of the ICRC, the UN, the Diplomatic Community as well as the Indian Government.

Addressing the Humanitarian Impact of Cluster Munitions: A Briefing in Geneva Organized by the ICBL and the Geneva Forum

The Geneva Forum and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines co-organized a forum on 9 October in Geneva, Switzerland entitled “Addressing the Humanitarian Impact of Cluster Munitions.” The event sought to inform states that were outside of, or new to, the Oslo Process on cluster munitions about the extent of the cluster munitions problem, the political activities that have occurred to date to address the problem, and the plans in place for developing a new treaty on cluster munitions.

Landmine Monitor Seeks Mine Action Researcher and Editor

The Landmine Monitor Editorial Team is seeking a Mine Action Researcher and Editor to prepare publishable quality reports on mine action for 25 countries/ areas. This will include undertaking desk and field research, coordinating and editing contributions by in-country researchers where relevant, drafting report text, and working with other members of the Editorial Team to edit reports to Landmine Monitor’s rigorous standards.
