Hello. I am writing to encourage you to participate in the Nobel Peace Laureate Campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi and the People of Burma, focusing our involvement on the use and effect of landmines in Burma. As you may have noticed in the minutes of the last CC meeting, at the suggestion of ICBL member Miriam Ferrer of the Philippines CBL and Yeshua Moser-Puangsuwan, Burma LM researcher, the CC agreed that we participate in this campaign in our capacity as ICBL focused on the landmines issue, not endorsing other political activities. We encourage you to also participate in this campaign and include ideas of how you might do so below.

As Landmine Monitor Report 2001 noted “Myanmar government forces and at least eleven ethnic armed groups continue to lay antipersonnel mines in significant numbers. The governments of Bangladesh and Thailand both protested use of mines by Myanmar forces inside their respective countries. In a disturbing new development, mine use is alleged to be taking place under the direction of loggers and narcotics traffickers, as well as by government and rebel forces.”

How you could support the campaign:

1) Burma Peace Campaign: See an extensive memo below from the Burma Peace Campaign regarding What You can do NOW and visit their website at http://www.burmapeacecampaign.org/

At this website you can:

  • sign up to endorse the campaign and declare your support. If you don't have access to the web, other contact details are provided for sending in your support.
  • get your organization, campaign, community to also declare support.
  • participate in the 8 December event, and you can join others in your community participating.
  • urge your Members of Parliament to sign a declaration of support

If you and/or your organization/campaign is already participating or would like to participate in one of the many activities being prepared worldwide as part of this campaign for Burma during the 100th anniversary of the Nobel, we do indeed encourage you to participate in those activities on a national level, and to please be sure and incorporate a landmines message in them. It is up to each campaign, of course, but if you'd like to join other organizations and events in your community and country in this campaign, you can fine a list of contacts on their site.

2) 3 December anniversary: If you are planning campaign events for the 3 December anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty we also encourage you to consider incorporating the Burma campaign.

3) 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize events: If you are planning your own events for the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, we also encourage you to consider incorporating this Burma campaign into those events.

4) For more information on landmines in Burma, you can visit:

Soon we will be adding a Burma page to our website as well, so check http://www.icbl.org/country/burma in a few days.
