Armenian Campaign

We want to inform You that National Committee of ICBL was established in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia on 14 January 1999.

Until 1999 there was no movement against landmines in Armenia.

Three representatives from Armenia participated in the First International Conference "New Steps to the Future Without Landmines" (Moscow, May of 1998) - Jemma Hasratian, President of Armenian Association of Women with University Education, Hranush Kharatian, Head of Department of Ethnography of Yerevan State University, Ruben Nicogosian, Physician.

In December 1998 Association of Women with University Education started the new project "To the 21st century without mine fields".

The project goals
* Shaping public opinion to support the international movement for abolishment of the production and usage of Landmines and advocating active involvement of women into this movement. * Setting up and emergizing Origination of the National Committee in support of the international movement for abolishment of production and usage of Land mines.

Association presents its attitude and commits itself to keep general public in our country well-informed about the activities of the movement for prohibition of Landmines production and use, for pressing for elimination of minefields in the territories where civilians live, and to conduct wide educational program for the population so as to decrease the potential loss of life among civilians, primarily among women and children.

New organization "Armenian Committee - International Campaign to Ban Landmines" will coordinate the movement against landmines and for control of other explosives on the territory of Armenia.

The Committee wants to creation of E-mail contacts with NGOs of Caucasian region and other regions, conduct exchange of experience and information, organizing joint actions with representatives of other republics of NIS. We will lobby of government agencies with the purpose of Armenian government joining the Ottawa Convention on abolishment of production and usage of anti-personnel mines.
