Ratification Alert - Update: One Mone on, One More please!!!

TO: All ICBL Campaigners and Supporters

Since the 21 June ICBL Action Alert on ratifications, we have seen three signatories ratify the ban treaty!!! On 30 June 2000, three countries ratified bringing us to a current total of 99 States Parties - Côte d'Ivoire (#97), Dominican Republic (#98) and Ghana (#99).

Landmine Monitor editors are finalizing Landmine Monitor Report 2000 for print and while the cut-off date for information in this next annual report was May 2000, big news such as ratification, universalization or any violation of the ban treaty can still be inserted at this extremely late stage. A number of signatories are believed to be very, very close to depositing their instrument of ratification. The Landmine Monitor would REALLY like to go to print on 1 August with 100 ratifications. And we would all really like AT LEAST 100 ratifications before the Second Meeting of States Parties in Geneva, Switzerland 11-15 September 2000.

Can you help to get one more ratification within the next week? Chose one or more signatories from the priority list below. Send them a fax, pick up the phone and call, visit the embassy, encourage your government to demarche this government… In short, try anything to urge them to ratify NOW!!! They could be #100! They could be included in the ICBL’s Landmine Monitor 2000 Report as a States Party!

The are currently 38 signatories that need to ratify in order to become legally bound by the provisions of the Mine Ban Treaty. While we want all of these signatories to ratify now, and particularly before the Second Meeting of States Parties in September, there are some that we believe are very, very close. Pick one to concentrate your efforts on in the next week and keep up the pressure on all 38!
