Reporting Update #7

According to Article Seven of the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, states parties
must report to the UN Secretary General “as soon as practical, and in any event not later than 180 days after the entry into force of this Convention for that State Party” on steps taken to implement aspects of the Convention. This is a legal obligation ­ it is not an option.
- To date thirty-eight reports have been received by the UN SG and posted by the Dept. Disarmament Affairs to the Internet at: http://domino.un.org/Ottawa.nsf
- Thirty-four states parties are late in submitting their reports. If you are in or in contact with one of these countries, please check to see why they are late and encourage them to submit their report now.
- Article Seven also requires annual updates covering the last calendar year, to be reported by 30 April each year. It is unclear which of the countries that have already submitted a first report are required to do so again by 30 April 2000.
