Author/Origin: ICBL icblSPAMFLTER@SPATMFLTERicbl.org

(Thursday 23 October 2003 ) Take a look at these new resources on key aspects of the mine ban: assistance for landmine survivors and mine clearance.

Mine action

  • A Guide to Mine Action

The Guide to Mine Action, produced by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, provides basic information on key aspects of mine action for diplomats, donors, lawyers, practitioners, scholars and journalists. The publication is a useful handbook for decision making, programme planning and research in mine-affected countries.

Order or download a copy of the guide at http://www.gichd.ch/about_gichd/guide/index.cfm.

  • Crossing the Divide : Landmines, Villagers and Organizations

This study by Ruth Bottomley was published by PRIO, UNICEF's and Handicap International - Belgium. It takes a closer look at informal, local level clearance initiatives in Cambodia and the methods, motivations and risks involved in this.

To order a hard copy of "Crossing the Divide" please write to: minepolicy (at sign) handicap.be or info (at sign) prio.no .

Read more about the release in this ICBL article.

The study can be downloaded here as a PDF file. (NB! This is a 18 Mb file).

Victim assistance

  • Monitoring Progress in Victim Assistance: Analysis of the Victim Assistance Indicator Study

This report was produced by Landmine Survivors Network for the ICBL working group on victim assistance. It examines developments in 69 mine-affected countries.

Despite the methodological and other difficulties involved, monitoring victim assistance is essential, because landmine survivors are the very basis of the Mine Ban Treaty.

The report can be downloaded as a zip file containing Microsoft Word Files, total 0,7 Mb. We are working on a better formatted version of this document.

  • Landmine Victim Assistance in South East Europe

This report by Sheree Bailey covers the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Kosovo and Slovenia.

By presenting a clear picture of the state of victim assistance in the region, the study helps to identify gaps in victim assistance and opportunities available for regional cooperation in this regard.

The study can be downloaded here as a 2,5 Mb PDF file.

  • Victim Assistance Fact Sheet

Based on the findings of the Landmine Monitor 2003 report, this study by Sheree Bailey provides an overview of Landmine/UXO Casualties and Survivor Assistance world-wide.

The fact sheet can be viewed here.

Index on landmines

Many more excellent resources on the landmine issue can be found in the ICBL's online library. The Index on Landmines: "A Comprehensive Guide to Landmine Resources On and Off the Internet" is available here.

The index includes a text database (with written material on landmines), an audiovisual section (containing films and CDs) and websites (with an overview of key sites on the internet).
