Kyrgyzstan and landmines
(Wednesday 12 November 2003 )
The Problem (continued)
- Mine survivors who need orthotic and prosthetic devices have to travel to neighbouring Tajikistan for treatment.
- Some mine clearance activities and mine risk education programmes are carried out. However, the authorities appear reluctant to expand clearance in some areas, citing the ongoing dispute with Uzbekistan about the country’s border delineation.
- Kyrgyzstan has a stockpile of mines inherited from Soviet Union days.
- Neighbours China, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have yet to ban antipersonnel mines. However, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan have joined the Mine Ban Treaty.
