Your Excellency, [OR OTHER TITLE]

I am writing on behalf of [ADD: NAME OF CAMPAIGN OR ORGANISATION] to respectfully request a meeting on the occasion of two important anniversaries for the global movement for a mine-free world.

On 3 and 10 December 2003 we mark the sixth anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty’s opening for signature in Ottawa, Canada and the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the ICBL and Jody Williams in Oslo, Norway respectively. Today, just six year’s since its establishment, the Mine Ban Treaty or The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines, and on their Destruction, has 141 States Parties and a further 9 signatory states. In addition to successes in universalising the treaty, there is much to be said about successes in the areas of treaty adherence and implementation.

Next year will see the treaty’s first Review Conference in Nairobi, Kenya (29 December – 3 December 2004). This will be a significant moment in the life of the convention, celebrating achievements to date and charting the way forward. Further, it is hoped that the lead-up to Nairobi will spur renewed commitment from States Parties and new accessions and ratifications from States not Party. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines will play an active role in the Review Conference and the preparation process. We look forward to working closely with the government of [ADD: COUNTRY] along the road to Nairobi and once we gather in the Kenyan capital in November 2004.

We would be grateful for an opportunity to discuss our hopes and expectations for the Review Conference [ADD: OTHER SPECIFIC DISCUSSION POINTS].

Sincerely yours,

[YOUR NAME, TITLE]
