In response to a need to develop consistent procedures in mine action, the United Nations (UN) began a consultation process to develop the new mine action standards. The result is a set of guidelines, "International Mine Action Standards" (IMAS), covering management and monitoring, mine stockpile destruction, mine risk education and mine and unexploded ordnance clearance, that are now the standards in force for all UN mine action operations. Once a national government adopts the standards, the IMAS become legally binding guidelines for all mine action operations.
