In 1986, Americas Watch (now known as Human Rights Watch) published one of the earliest, if not first, reports on the impact of landmines. The report details civilian landmine casualties in El Salvador and Nicaragua, as well as mine use by parties to the conflict, all of which laid the weapon. The report also analyzed existing legal agreements governing mine use, such as the Geneva Conventions and Convention on Conventional Weapons.
