Requested in 1994 to carry out a global human rights assessment of
children in armed conflict, Graca Machel spent the following two years
conducting field visits and research on the effects of war on children.
In 2000, she was asked to review her 1996 report for the International
Conference on War-affected Children in Winnipeg, Canada. This book
draws upon the findings and analysis of the 1996 report, assesses
progress made and obstacles encountered in efforts over the past five
years to protect children in armed conflict and to fulfill their rights and
includes a chapter that specifically addresses the effects of landmines
on children.
