People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3954 people have signed the treaty.

Not only landmines, lets get rid of all weapons of war and learn to talk to each other and negociate. We all have a much bigger issue: global warming. And we are only going to solve it by cooperation!

I find the continued use of mines reprehensible. They cause death and maiming far after the people who place them for protection have gone. The cost in human suffering is huge. It's sad to think they are still used because they are more economical than other devises and methods.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines is one of the most noble projects, among many on the planet. Sadly, mostly ignored by the media. Name and shame the producers and expose the essential inhumanity of the arms industry and its vast projects. Samten de Wet

I got confronted with this subject matter after visiting a course called "International Humanitarian Law" at University. Now I'm writing a paper on this topic for it.
I just cant understand how some industrial / "developed" countries pledge to peace and security and keep on telling how important it is to promote such things, like peace, human rights, security etc.
And at the same time cant even make the smallest steps towards a better world. How can a country not sign such treaty and at the same time think they're doing good for the world?
Its just totally hypocritical and controversial. Its like "Oh yeah this treaty is a good idea and we know mines do harm more than good... but still we want indefinite exceptions to use them... just in case you know."

Any kind of mine (anti.personnel, vehicle), clustermunition or any of such weapons exist long after a conflict... they are asleep waiting to be waked so they can destroy.
The victim is chosen indiscriminately and coincidentally.
It is extremely urgent that the international community works on their total prohibition.
