People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

It is time that the countries who planted the mines take responsibility to clear them, including those which were planted in North Africa in the Second World War.

War itself is dispicable. But, to make war on civilians and children is unforgivable. Why can we not acknowledge this and summon up the courage to quit using weapons that kill more innocents than participants? And why can we not summon up the compassion to quit using these weapons alltogether?

Please stop the planting of mines, and the cruel way the countries seek out the mines. What can we do? E-mail me if you have a clue. Don't let the woman and children go out there to find them. That's like WWI tactics. We've come further than that. There must be a way to find these with all the modern technology. Dogs, no. computer generated robots. YES. No reason to kill a living thing to find one when there is a better way.

The George W. Bush administration may soon resume production of antipersonnel land mines in a move that is at odds with both the international community and previous US policy on the weapons. Having worked on and off for human rights groups for the past 17 years of my life, and also having traveled this world, I know far too well the suffering, pain and horrors land mines have caused. The very concept of a land mine is so utterly inhuman, cruel and merciless it is amazing that any nation could have ever produced them in the first place. But after seeing a child or any human being in the aftermath of a land mine, it is inconceivable that every nation has not ratified the Ottawa Treaty. I was disgraced as a United States citizen by President Clinton for not signing the treaty originally. However, I am absolutely horrified by Human Rights Watch report that the Cheney-Bush military machine will once again begin producing these cowardly weapons of terror! How dare you Mr. Bush call anyone else a terrorist?

After seeing landmine victims in person in Cambodia years ago, I've long supported the ban on landmines. I would like to get more involved in the campaign to stop production of mines, clear away existing mines, and support those victims. I am horrified at the news that the US is still involved in landmine use. Shame on Mr. Bush!

Actually as a staff member of the "Instituto Uruguayo para el Desarrollo" (an NGO) begining to bring conferences about antipersonal mines to explain the people of my country how big is the problem around the world and how can they do to suport and bring help for the world's effort to ban landmines. Due to what I have seen as professional in the desminado area that which allowed me to gauge in all their magnitude the problem of the mines in world and the suffering that these they cause to the peoples, it is that I commit my effort and that of the organization that integrate, to support them in the measure of our possibilities in so noble and important campaign.

I hope that one day people will understand that they should think before doing something; before selling arms/guns/landmines.

If all those industrialist and workers could stop earning morning money with the blood of other people...

maybe their own children or own family member should be killed by the gun or landmines they have produce to understand that but then some innocent would again pay the price of their live..

If it is illegal to purposefully target innocent civilians in military conflict than there can be no justification for the legality of landmines. Landmines are an evil that work to destroy peoples lives and cause victims of war long after the wars they were laid for have ended. No righteous, civilised society should tolerate the use of landmines. No government can command respect if they use landmines.

Land mines have an inestimable human cost attached to them for both soldiers and civilians. The cost-benefit analysis demonstrates they have long outlived their use and the 15 states that continue to produce them are engaging in an expensive and inhumane transaction with the most dire long-term consequences. It for that reason I support Canada's position on the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and would encourage others to do the same.

I wasn't fully aware of the damage that these landmines can create until I read Angelina Jolie's: Notes from My Travels. She talks about HALO which is an organization that destroys landmines. After reading Angelina Jolie's book and reading information that was on HALO's website, I truely believe that there should be a ban on landmines.

I agree that landmines should be ban from all off the countries because it can kills and injured thousands of people in this world. Some people didn't do anything wrong. But they have to die because of landmines. Some people who are also died because of landmines maybe are important people. Maybe for example they are a director of a company, or a person that many people are rely on. So... I think every governments in the world need to think about banning landmines.

There's no more war that has to go on anymore, and anyway- some countries will be much poor if they have another war.
What is there a reason to leave those landmines in the ground all the time?
There's no use, there's no more war, the countries which need more population are loosing their people and the KIDS are dieing because of the explosions of landmines! One little step on them can end their whole lives?
Those countries should do something about them, rather than watching the news on tv everyday hearing about kids and adults dieing because of the landmines. Or maybe they won't even go on the news because it happens so often.
Its not supposed to be like that.
