People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

Land mines are an abomination, meant only to maim. And those that suffer the most are the innocent.
Despite what is said by leaders, these are not protective, defensive devices, but offensive terror-striking, evil things, and should be banned from the earth.
A civilized country has not a single reasonable, rational reason for the use of these.

I believe that as an over-privellaged citizen of the world (i.e. never have been a victim of war, landmines, hunger, poverty, joblessness, etc...), it is not only my duty, but also my responsibility to fight for victims of injustice worldwide. The least I can do is to support organizations such as this.

I'm not very politically astute but I do know that maiming and killing innocent people is fundamentally wrong and abhorant. If the world will not wake up to this destructive inhumane madness then who's going to be next? I could not sleep at night knowing that this kind of ... was happening in the world and that I was in some way (passively) complicit.

The children of my congregations raised approximately $500 this year during Vacation Bible School to help build an orphanage in Angola for the victims of thirty years of war and these abominations called landmines. When we talked about why the children were so desperate for care, I was genuinely ashamed to talk about landmines--because I know all too well our governmental and industrial complicity in the massacre and maiming of my sisters and brothers there.
If landmines aren't a manifestation of the Antichrist, then what is?

I believe in being able to defend one's homeland and borders, but to knowingly use devices which hurt more innocent civilians and children is immoral and there is no excuse. Those that think it's "okay" to use land mines as a necessary evil are those that aren't exposed to them. If you are willing to start a war, you should be willing to be at the front line. I dare say, that you won't find them risking their limbs.

All countries which have inserted landmines into their territory should, through economic sanctions be forced to remove these devices within a specified time (i.e. 12 months)or be subject to severe econimic sanctions until such time as they have complied. There should be no provision for extending the time for removal of the mines. Permitting delays only subjects more innocent people to the devastating results of unknowingly detonating the devices. Allowing more people to be maimed through lack of commitment to remove these devices is unconscionable. The time has come for action -- not WORDS

Every year children and adults die from serious injuries caused by landmines. In my point of view, landmines are unnecessary even in wars. As the landmines are put randomly everywhere, many people are afraid to even leave their homes because of the devastating effect that landmines may have. When soldiers lay down these nuclear bombs, they don?t consider the pain and fear that will be set upon this land, even if peace is held. For years afterwards, legs and limbs, if not whole bodies, are blown to pieces because of these war devices.
In war, soldiers can detect landmines with special detectors, or by prodding the ground in front of them with their bayonets. But what they don?t realize is that not many people are aware of how to get around these weapons.
I hope I have convinced you
stephanie
