People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

As a journalist, I have seen first-hand the heart-rending consequences of landmines in places like Angola and Mozambique. The people I saw were not combatants, but innocent women and children. It is time to stop this madness.

To those of you looking at this thinking What does she know stes just a kid you are wrong. I am a Debate student and have been studying this problem extensively for quite some time now. For example the ICRC as of 1998 estimated that landmines claim 26,000 civilian victims a year. This alone is a good reason to ban AP mines.

I work in the Dutch army in the engineercoprs, and i've seen what mines can do to people. We teach all over the world how to clear mines, but that isn't enough. To lay a mine it will cost a country a few dollars, to clear one mine it cost many hundreds of dollars en even so many casualties. Warindustry is earning lots af money with it. That's why i say "BAN ALL LANDMINES", most of the times children are the real victims

I find even the thought of using landmines barbaric and outrageous in a generation that is supposedly so technologically advnaced. This is an issue that needs more public attention and dedication with regards to how serious the problem is and that it needs to be dealt with at a faster pace than what it currently is.

In 1993, I went to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. I carried some self-importance with me as the only person I knew who had been there. That however, was shattered the first day as I arrived on the steps of Angkor Wat, and the first thing i saw was a vicitm of landmines. I quickly saw things differently, the vibe of my visit seriously altered. I urge you to support the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

An individual who kills or hurt a civilian is called a terrorist. A nation who does it whether willfully or otherwise is nothing but an 'evil' state. Guns and bombs are used by terrorist,Landmines are used by state. I hope my country will sign the treaty soon for it is good in so many other ways.

Landmines were put in countries during times of conflict without people in power thinking seriously about what was to be done with the landmines after the conflict was over. As is all to often the case in our society, there is little forsight. We need to learn from this. We need to correct these mistakes and implement rules and laws to stop such atrocities ever happenning again. Where there are existing landmines they drastically and significantly effect the lives of the people who live there. Steps MUST and should be taken to remove these landmines. People are constantly quoting that we should "learn from history". We should learn from this, appriciate the landmines are a weapon that outlive the war and go on maiming and killing for years, and that they should no longer be used in any conflict any where in the world.

Many aboriginal peoples world-wide have sustained suffering as a result of these horrific equipments of war. I consider myself to be fortuntate enough to have been born and to live in a country that took the initiative to be the instigating nation to draw up an international treaty, against land mines in our capital. Many aboriginal peoples in other countries are not so fortunate, as those in Vietnam, and other Asian countries and continents. When Britain and South Africa, and other nations who are leading producers of land mine production cease to do so, than the message has been heard. The United States bears a strong responsibility in hearing such a message as well and accountability for a lot of land mine pollution in Vietnam, Laos, Korea, etc. Perhaps when the United States of America decides to sign the treaty and join its strongest ally in the world, their n

Dear G7 leaders
The landmine holocaust requires urgent action. When so many people die or are maimed each day it is strange that in the 21st century so many
countries, in particular the USA, still persist in these barbaric practices. War is the result of failed intelligence and imagination. Landmines which are left behind to continue to kill and injure civilians for decades after the conflicts are over are acts of war directed at..men, women and children... This is barbaric and our failure to direct enough resources to clean up these sites is criminal. We know this disaster exists and yet we are perpetuating the crime.
This could be changed if you would agree to direct enough resources to clean up the sites and if you decided to stop creating new killing fields. ...it is up to you.
