People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

Today, I heard Ms. Susan Walker speak to McGill students about her work in the minefields of Southeast Asia. Her harrowing stories were both heart wrenching and heart warming, at the same time. A great optimist that she is, she reminded us that by doing something world's injustices can be stopped and the plight of teeming millions can be improved,

I commend everyone for their selfless effort to ban landmines. Let us hope that the powers that be realise that they do not need landmines in their wars. The only people that who should be at risk in war are the soldiers that are fighting in it and not the innocent civilians running away from it.

Land mines are unnessary tool in morden warfare. When we can target military targets with deadly accuracy, why do we require a weapon which to present day has injured more civilians than troops.

There is no longer any excuse for using landmines. They are cruel and stupid, in their harm to innocent civilians, often children. Your country cannot stand<br>as a civilized or proud one, and still advocate the use of these horrible weapons.
