People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

The indiscrimnate maiming/killing of civilians and non-combatants (often years after war hostilities have ceased completely) is totally unacceptable in any civilized society. His story is inspiring and one that everyone should see. I support him and the effort to remove landmines from the affected countries....and the effort to curtail the production of landmines.

Landmines are apolitical, amoral, and unparticular - they target friend and foe, stranger and ally, young and old, noncombatant and warrior. Their indiscriminate use has lead to the pain and suffering of untold generations that had no part of the fight - they had the unfortuatous luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. As long as Man chooses to employ munitions as part of world diplomacy, those munitions must remain under the direction of human control. Landmines, by their nature, are antithetical to this idea. Therefore, it is incumbant on the leaders and citizens of the world to join together and demand strict control on the mines currently in use and ban any future manufacture or deployment. Complete and total elimination is the only acceptable policy regarding landmine use.

A total ban should mean just that-TOTAL !!
States, when signing conventions, should adhere to the spirit as well as to the letter of the convention. I believe the rigging of anti-tampering measures to anti-vehicle mines is just a synical exercise in an effort to side-step the convention. "Soldiers that never sleep" should be accounted for just as soldiers that do sleep. The internally displaced will continue to add to the statistics for many years to come without any further deployment of these devices.
No mines Not ever No derogation of responsibilities on States' part ever

Ban Landmines!!

I did a history fair project on this movement, and now i fully support it. Thanks for everything the movement has done. And oh yeah.... the US needs to sign NOW!! What's our problem??? We say we are one of the world's most modern country and we start wars to "help" other people. So why can't we stop this landmine madness? Its not a war, its not that hard. I'm only 14 and i see that we need to sign the MBT. Why can't the president?
