People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

As a young female graduate in Adelaide I began reading this treaty by saying..."well what can I do, I am just one person." But I am not just one person I am part of another 3000 or so who are also committed to keeping the Governments around the world and in particular Australia accountable for their actions towards this and many other social issues. I believe that if everyone used their own personal networks, communities and contacts world wide to generate awareness for this ongoing crime I would no longer be 1 in 3000 trying to do something but one in hundreds of thousands. This would be a voice and power the Government could not fail to ignore.

Land mines are a horrible example of the cruelties of war and its effects on civilians all over the world. Every 30 minutes, atleast one person is maimed or killed by a land mine. Actions need to be taken to prevent landmines from ever being used as a way of warfare again, and we need to take steps to deactivate present landmines and protect civilians from being injured due to these landmines.

I am ashamed that the U.S. has failed to sign on to ths treaty. Another instance of profits before people I'm sure.
Americans had better hold their representatives accountable for such poor foreign policy choices. When we fail to make the world safer for everyone everywhere then we will not be safe at home. Our happiness and prosperity is directly tied to the happiness and prosperity of our global neighbors.

I am an 8th grader who just finished doing a history fair project on the ICBL. I love what they did!!! But don't get me started on the US. How can our government justify not banning landmines? In having landmines in certain places, they may "save them", but they probably kill or stop soldiers from protecting other people. Or, our government can just drop out of wars, but don't punish citizens because you are so stubborn, government.

We do not need to use violence in order to solve our problems and differences in this world, we need to use our brains via peaceful conflict resolution by sitting down and talking to onea nother. Then and ONLY then will we be able to hold our heads up as decent human beings as we work together towards a less violent planet.

The effect that landmines have on the children of this planet is such a fundamental human rights issue that I would hope that it could transcend the common polarization of politics today.

It's time we take back our future from the blood stained hands of the millitary industrial machine.

Who are these people that create and perpetuate these dirty little wars to maximize profits?

Why it's the same people who sell us our refrigerators and washing machines, medicines and motor cars.

Hit them where it hurts; before you spend your cash (or invest your super fund) try to find companies that DON'T manufacture weapons.

Landmines and cluster bombs are a crime against humanity; the people who manufacture these weapons and profit from the use, are the lowest form of criminal and deserve prosecution.

It's a burning shame that long after the US and Russia have shaken hands, hugged, and kissed, that people who fought their 'proxy' wars in the Cold War era are still being killed or maimed by landmines originating from these countries. The producers of these weapons owe the world the repayment of serious efforts at cleanups (consistent with US efforts to rebuild Europe after WW2), so that people can go back to farming their lands and growing their food. What a hope? Instead, they and their businesses continue to make and export landmines, sometimes to the same people they addicted to them earlier. Man's worst enemy is Man!!!

Tell everyone you know to tell everyone they know about what is going on in the world. If we can't stop the use of landmines, then the least we can do is help remove the ones that are killing and injuring thousands of innocent human beings.

We may not realize this but Landmines are one of the biggerst killers
Innocent children who just want o play in the fields get their legs and arms blown off.
Mne and women who work in the fields or in the streets do not know whether they will ever return home.
The countries which have active landmines are the poorest and unless we attempt to get rid of them, more and more poor familkies will end up homeless and dying of starvation because they cannot afford bills and the food.
Donate money to the charities . Believe me you will be making a huge difference.
