People

It is my strong belief that mines, which may be exploded by the presence or proximity of a person, are morally unacceptable. I fully support the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, transfer and production on anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.

Through their signature, governments promise to officially adopt and ratify the Ottawa Treaty and to comply with all of its terms. These include support for global demining work and assistance for mine victims. Through my signature on the People's treaty, I commit to working to ensure that governments keep these promises.

3956 people have signed the treaty.

Peace.

I see no difference between land mines and chemical warfare. People are not insects or pests to be killed and maimed annonymously. Its ironic that the three main countries that will not sign a ban are the countries where land mine do not exist. Women and children all over the world affected by these barbaric weapons do not deserve losing limbs and lives. Wake up world, the dark ages are over OR ARE THEY ?

As a journalists, I understand what land mines have left as casualties in many war torn countries. Images of limbless children and women in countries like Angola and Mozambique are very pathetic. Unfortunately, many wars are going on in Africa and the mines which are planted today will continue to wreck havoc many years after. I therefore join my voice to the thousands that have voted against the use of land mines. If there is any other way I can contribute to this campaign, I will be eager to do so. Keep up the fight!

Having recently moved to Laos to undertake an internship, I am shocked to learn about the horrible legacy of the bombings during the Vietnam War. It upsets me even further that the US is withholding technical information related to some of the bombs, which, if it was available, would make it easier for the incredible brave organizations to do an even better job.

An estimated 60-200 million mines are still buried in 45 countries, making large areas of agricultural land unusable (in Cambodia estimated 40%, in Angola estimated 90%; source:UN) Cambodia & Angola may seem very far away, but the people there are entitled to the same quality of life that we are enjoying.

Landmines are useless weapons..they may acheive their purpose of killing or dismembering people, but they dont choose their targets. Innocent people who happen to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time are paying for their mistake with their limbs and lives.
