Getting the message out there
on your own

The media doesn’t cover every event, so don’t rely on them as your only publicity vehicle. Banners, posters, clothing, mailing lists and many other tools can be employed to let people know about upcoming events.

Keep in mind:

  • Who is the target audience? Make sure that the materials are appropriate for their intended audience.
  • Make sure that your message is very short, simple and clear. Design catchy campaign slogans that people will remember. The fewer words the better!
  • Use eye-catching graphics.
  • Make sure the content is culturally appropriate and will be well received by community members.
  • Make sure to include information about the event: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How?
  • Include contact details so people can contact you if they have questions or require additional information.
  • Always make sure to leave plenty of time for advertising. Creating banners, posters and placing ads in local publications can take weeks.

Banners

Banners can be used to raise awareness about the landmines issue and advertise your events. Decide where you would like to use banners. They can be hung across hallways or on walls in schools, churches or community centers. They can also be hung outside these venues, between trees and across streets. Use banners at information tables and other events to publicize your activities. Always make sure to get permission from venues before hanging banners.

Paper, fabric, plastic and many other materials can be used to make banners. Keep in mind that outdoor banners need to be waterproof. Ask local fabric or print shops to donate supplies or ask a local print shop to donate or reduce the cost of professionally printing banners.

Design your message. Keep it very simple but include all the details about your event - Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Provide a contact telephone number. Make sure that the message is short and can be read from a distance of several meters. Use bold colors to make the message visible and use simple graphics if possible. Paint or draw the banner yourself or request the assistance of art students.

Chalking

Use chalk to write information about upcoming events on playgrounds and other paved areas at your school, church or community center. Use sidewalks in high-traffic public areas. Even though chalk easily washes away with water, make sure to get permission from the location before starting.

Clothing

Make a statement, wear your message! T-shirts, hats and other clothing items and accessories are a great way to fashionably advertise events! Develop a slogan for your campaign or event. Make sure it is simple and accurately expresses your message. Ask art students if they can design a graphic or logo for your event and incorporate your slogan into the design. Make designs for your group or for specific events. For example, you may wish to make t-shirts for conferences, benefit concerts and other
large events. Make sure to include the event name, date and location in the design.

Decide what you would like to make with the design – a shirt, hat, skirt, jacket? Approach local print shops that do silk screening and ask them to discount or donate their services. Make sure you have enough money to pay for any printing costs and for materials such as t-shirts. Ask local businesses to donate materials. Decide how you are going to distribute the final product. Are you going to give them out for free to members? Are you going to sell them to recover your production costs? Are you going to sell them as a fundraising project? Be realistic about how many copies you should make.

If people see you wearing landmines-themed clothing they may ask you questions about the landmines issue and upcoming events. Make sure you are able to answer their questions.

Email Distribution Lists

Find out if local or regional youth, peace and other social justice groups have email distribution lists or electronic mailing lists. Subscribe to these relevant lists to keep current on what is going on with global issues. Email information about upcoming events to these groups and invite individuals to participate. Go global and advertise upcoming events on the ICBL’s Youth Against War Yahoogroup. Subscribe to the mailing list by sending a blank email to yaw-info-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

Information Tables

Information tables provide an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the landmines issue and encourage people to take action on the landmines issue. Publicize upcoming events at information tables. Use posters, flyers, banners, stickers and other materials to advertise your activities.
